What the living ask

Before you sit down at the board — the questions that come up most, answered plainly.

Is Planchette a real Ouija board?

No. Planchette is an entertainment app, and the board says so before it says anything else — you accept a disclaimer in the app before your first question. Every answer is written by an AI model running on your iPhone, not by a spirit.

How does the board answer?

A language model runs locally on your iPhone and composes the reply, which the planchette then spells out letter by letter — YES, NO, or a single word pulled from the dark. Nothing is scripted and nothing is pre-written, so the same question asked twice will not answer the same way.

Does Planchette work offline?

Yes, once it is ready. The AI model is roughly 1.1 GB and downloads once, the first time you use the app. After that the board needs no connection at all, because every answer is generated on the device.

Is Planchette free?

The app is free on the App Store. Eight of the twelve spirits answer for free, and the board assigns you a different one each day. Unlimited is an optional subscription that lets you choose who answers instead of taking whoever turns up.

Do my questions leave my phone?

No. There are no accounts, no analytics, no cookies and no ads, and no conversation data is ever transmitted — there is no server to transmit it to. Everything stays on your device, protected by your passcode and your device encryption.

Who are the twelve spirits?

Eight answer freely: The Restless, The Beloved, The Seer, The Trickster, The Hollow, The Poltergeist, The Child and La Llorona. Four more are Sealed — Amityville, ZoZo, Dybbuk and the Bell Witch — and they are malignant to a spirit. Each one answers in its own register, so who turns up changes what you get told.

What are the Sealed spirits?

The four malignant ones, kept behind the veil and answering to no daily rota. They are Unlimited only, with one exception: an in-app event can break a seal and let one of them speak to everyone for as long as the window stays open.

What are the in-app events?

Timed windows where the board changes its own rules — a Sealed spirit made free to every user, a themed deck, a board dressed for the season. Each one opens and closes on a fixed date, and the event cards on this page always show what is open right now.

Is Planchette suitable for children?

No. The app is rated 16+ on the App Store and is not intended for anyone younger.

…is what it says when it lets you go. The board is waiting.
